Goodbye - Steve Earle w/Emmylous Harris
Lyrics

I remember holdin' on to you
All them long and lonely nights I put you through
Somewhere in there I'm sure I made you cry
But I can't remember if we said goodbye

But I recall all of them nights down in Mexico
One place I may never go in my life again
Was I just off somewhere or just too high
But I can't remember if we said goodbye

I only miss you every now and then
Like the soft breeze blowin' up from the Caribbean
Most Novembers I break down and cry
Cause I can't remember if we said goodbye

But I recall all of them nights down in Mexico
One place I will never go in my life again
Was I just off somewhere or just too high
But I can't remember if we said goodbye
No I can't remember if we said goodbye
Goodbye goodbye

Trivia

Recorded Oct 1998. Sessions At West 54th. Show also featured The Del McCoury Band. The song is from Steve`s terrific 1995 album "Train A Comin`". Thanks to 'mcaguitars' I now know that the guitar is a Gibson 'Roy Smeck' Re-issue.

The song was featured on an episode of Friday Night Lights. Matt looks out the plane window at the flat Texas land he's leaving behind again. The camera pulls back and shows Landry sitting next to him, flipping through a brochure on Chicago. The camera closes in on Matt's face as Steve Earle sings, "Can't remember, if we said goodbye" over and over, and we move closer and closer to Matt's face, having to say our goodbyes, because this is it for us and Matt Saracen, and all I can think about is how Matt Saracen isn't sure here, he loves Chicago and his new life, but he loves Julie and he knows they can't be together now, but he doesn't know what the future holds for him, and you guys, we aren't ever going to know, because Matt Saracen is not a real person, which is a hard, hard thing (TM Tami Taylor) for me to even realize right now, at the end. The end of Matt Saracen for me. Oh, oh, oh.
